travel insurance to vietnam

My wife %26amp; I are travelling to Vietnam in April 09, we already have the visas requires for 6 months. We then wish to travel to Cambodia for a further 3 months and then finishing off back to Vietnam for a final 3 months. So, all in all 12 months travelling. We wish to hire motorcycles whilst in Vietnam, and are finding it difficult to get the appropriate travel insurance for this purpose. We are finding that companies are offering 60 day and 180 day insurance policies only, so, my question is are there any companies which offer 12 month travel insurance which includes motorcycle insurance.

You could try thaivisa.com as I think that they have their own insurance for expats living abroad. You would need to be legally riding the bikes so in Thailand that would mean an International Driving Permit (IDP). I%26#39;m not too sure regarding the laws in Vietnam regarding bikes, but do know that they hire them. The key is that it must be LEGAL for you to be covered.

We have some pics and stories of our trips here... www.bobandjanette.com which may help.

Happy %26amp; safe travels

Cheers, thanks for the information, sounds like your having a fantastic time. Your web page was good to read.

Thanks Pedro. I hope your wife and you enjoy your travels. They sound like a fun time. We are considering hiring/buying bikes in Singapore and riding up to Chiang Mai.

Cheers

Operating a vehicle in Viet Nam requires a Vietnamese Drivers Licence- International Drivers Licence not sufficient. You can only get a VNDL if you have minimum three months Residency Permit and pass the test (which is in Vietnamese). So, riding a motorbike in VN without a VNDL will be illegal, that%26#39;s why the travel insurance won%26#39;t cover you.

Hi Yorkfoodie, thanks for your information, we didn%26#39;t know that we would need a Vitnamese Drivers Licence for motorbikes! Motorbikes would have given us a wee bit more freedom. We have to re-think a little about our trip, looks like we are going to have to use the local buses, taxis and trains to get around, which is a pain. We used buses %26amp; trains to get around India, so we a ';rough'; idea of what to expect now. Happy travels, Pedro.
