Halong Bay Junk Boat o/night trips

Hello, I%26#39;ve read with interest the comments about booking hotels on arrival in Vietnam. I%26#39;ve made some bookings but so far have nothing planned for Hanoi. I would appreciate feedback on if this is the case for travel in March 07? Also how easy is to get an o/night Halong bay trip within a day of arriving in Hanoi? I have found something which appears reasonable for USD85 per person. Any thoughts on getting cheaper once there?

Thanks for any advice - first timer to Vietnam and first timer to making plans/booking myself.

Ok, That is does not matter, almost boat in halong will leave Halong harbour arround 12:30 to 1 pm to the Bay, so if you would like to go to Halong Bay on the same day arrive, your flight should land around 7:30 am, because from Hanoi airport to Halong City: 3 hours, 1 hour for check out at airpot. You can make reservation with some local travel agent they will arrange the vehicle to pick you up directly to Halong. The Shuttle bus or bus sharing tour is not available for that route.

There are very many tour operators in the H Bay area. They range in price from $35 US to $500 US per person per night. Its the old saying, you get what you pay for. The very top end ';Junks'; (%26gt; $200)are more like floating 5 star hotels and are wonderful if you can afford them.

Around $100 a night should get you a good standard of boat (3 star !!) which is great for a one night stay.

The low cost boats (%26lt; $50) are quite basic and more suit back packers on their travels.

We went on the Phoenix Cruiser (junk). It costs $99 per person for the 2 day / 1 night cruise including transfers from Hanoi and back. It was very good.

Halong Bay is a great place to see. Hope you enjoy it.

Group or ';sharing tour'; departed from Hanoi city center.

Buses are not allowed inside old quarters,a shuttle van will pick you up from the appointed places and transfer to a tour bus or the van itself for the trip to Halong Bay.

The day group tour normally depart Hanoi city in the morning,pick up at 7am and transfer you to a big bus if the group is big or the van that pick you up will go directly to Halong Bay.

Bus are not allowed to go into old Quarter due to narrow street.

The last time we join a group/day tour cost us around US20/pax.pick up and returned to hotel,Halong Bay tour,lunch ,ticket to caves all inclusive.

We did the trip DIY,very easy to arrange,just the evening notice and the pick up will come to collect you from the appointed place early in the morning.

There are so many junks to choose so its overwhelming. My wife and I are thinking of going to Halong Bay 2D/1N with overnight on-board.
