Malaria in Mekong Delta

Hi,

I am about to spend 3 weeks in SE Asia so am currently sorting out my jabs etc. All the areas i am visiting (Thailand, Saigon, Hoi An, Hanoi) seem to be Malaria free but we are very interested in booking a 1-2 day tour of the Mekong Delta but are concerned about the Malaria risk as we would prefer not to take (and pay for) malaria tablets. Does anyone have any information on this?

Thanks

Malaria in Mekong Delta

Hi

We were in Mekong in January and after much pondering and even posting the same question as you on TA in December and seeking medical advice we decided as a family take Doxycycline, which is a antibiotic, used to treat many things and as a prevention for Malaria.

However, we also used insect repellent with a Deet concentration which we can purchase in Sydney(not sure about London)and were hard pressed to even spot a Mozzie!! Not too sure when your trip is, however give thought to the wet season if you are travelling then.

If I was to do the trip again in January I would not take the tablets. But in the end -- Its your call.
