Advice on planning a 2 week trip to Vietnam

Me and my partner are thinking about going to Vietnam in December but are unsure of the best places to go. We both want to visit Hanoi and Ho Chi Mingh city but aren%26#39;t sure of which of these is the better option as one is in the North and one is in the South. Also, we were wanting to spend a few days in a city i.e the above named cities, then travel on to a beach resort and I have read that Nha Trang is the beach resort to go to, however, I have concerns that this may be very commercialised now. Does anyone have an itineary that they did which they really enjoyed? We would even consider visiting both Hanoi and Ho Chi Mingh city but would need to know the easiest/cheapest ways to get there i.e trains etc.

Hi Bonita

I visited both cities last August, Air fare between them is not too bad. We enjoyed both cities, but thought that Hanoi has much more charm (Hanoi seems to preserve a lot of old Asia, while Ho Chi Min is, relatively speaking, quite 21st century). Our favorite are was the northern mountains, around Sapa. No matter what you do, you will have a great time. The Vietnamese are amazingly friendly. The only down side is that in nearly every first encounter, they will be trying to make some money off of you. Once you get past that, however, the country becomes purely charming.
