Anything is possible in vietnam. But you wouldn%26#39;t necessarily want to do it. The road distance would be pushing up towards 1,000 km and at around 50km an hour - a lot of it on the wrong side of the road, or as the third or fourth lane of a two-lane highway - it would be a fairly long and interesting trip.

Is it possible of course. Can you, or should you as a Tourist travel by your own car that answer would be NO. Here is why.

1. There are several security stops along the way. You will have to pay a toll/bribe each time you meet a checkpoint. On average its about 50,000 dong.

2. You see lots of people rent motorbikes. I did. The driving laws are as such this applys to cars as well. You are reuired to have a Vietnam Drivers License. The local drivers id, and international drivers license is not accepted in Vietnam. When they rent you transportation they are suppose to get a copy of your passport majority of them dont. It one of those doesnt really matter until you get got moments. Since you will be going through checkpoints that would be one of those moments.

I would advise that you take a open tour bus, private driver or fly from Hanoi to Hue Airport then arrange transport from Hue - Hoi An which is 3 hrs by bus.

Did some more research for you. If you are dead set on driving yourself here is information taken from the Australian Embassy in Vietnam. How to obtain a Temporary Vietnam Drivers License. Driving without one is a 3 year jail sentence if caught.

…embassy.gov.au/hnoi/Driving_in_Vietnam.html

In Hanoi, applications for temporary driver%26#39;s licences should be directed to the Office of Traffic %26amp; Public Works, 16 Cao Ba Quat Street . In Ho Chi Minh City, applications should be directed to the Office of Transportation, 63 Ly Tu Trong Street, District 1 - Telephone 8223760

To apply for a Vietnamese driving licence (either to drive a motor vehicle or a motorbike) in Hanoi , the applicant should contact the Centre for Automotive Training and Mechanism, 83A Ly Thuong Kiet Street – Telephone 9422715. . In Ho Chi Minh City , applications should be lodged with the Office of Transportation, 63 Ly Tu Trong Street, District 1 – Telephone 8223760.

I%26#39;m agreeing with slopenbeach about the drive.

I would never drive in this place. Pray you make it in one piece or don%26#39;t hit someone - particularly while you are driving if thats you are doing. I would consider it if I had a car with driver and a few stops on the way.

Preferably I%26#39;d catch a plane to Da Nang. Hoi an is around 40 mins from the airport.

Forgot to add, do not fly from HCM city to hanoi and then to Hue. You are going too far and then back tracking, and then about a 3hr car trip roughly to Hoi an.

Plenty of flights from HCM to Da Nang. Last time I did it i think it was about 1,000,000 dong, one way. That was just before tet(VN new year) this year.

Totally skipped my mind. I agree fly to Da Nang much better option then arrange transportion to Hoi An from there. I drove a motorbike from Hoi An to The Danang Port took about 1hr so in a car it should be about 40 mins.

In any case, to get VN driver%26#39;s licence you need a VN Temporary Residence Permit of at least 3 months%26#39; duration, as well as a valid licence in your country of origin. And if you have an accident and are driving without a licence, your travel insurance company won%26#39;t want to know you.
