Up front Hotel payment..5 months out?

I am finalising hotel bookings for our July trip to Vietnam: mysel, husband and 12 yr old son. The hotels, 4/5 star, are requesting full payment now, 5 months in advance. As quite seasoned travellers, we have never had to do this so far out. One month yes...but 5!!!!!!!!!! Is this typical of Vietnam Hotels or, a recent symptom attributable to the current global situation? Any ideas? Any advice?

You book directly with hotel or via travel agent?

As I know only the Vinparl, Sixsense hotel required pay advance 45 days of check in

I suspect many 4/5* hotels have cashflow issues as occupancy is way down on last year, so they%26#39;re trying to get hold of your cash now.

Either tell them you%26#39;ll pay now if you get a 10-20% discount off your room rate, or hold onto your money %26amp; wait for rates to come down later in the year.

Thanks for this reponse so far. I am booking directly with hotel. They are quoting prices saying that they are discount thus,....pay now. Reality is though...prices are similar to what a local Sydney agent is providing me. But, I am a bit of a control freak...want to do bookings myself so know what is happening. I will try to negotiate further with them.

Should book with vietnam local agent, so that will good better rate than local agent in Australia
