Ha Long bay trips - howz the sea?

Having been caught up in the Tsunami in Thailand on a boat trip a few years back, I am cautious about boat travel. Does anyone know if the bay has a reputation for being choppy in April? Are life jackets a standard or will I be laughed at if I ask for them?

being prone to sea-sickness, I asked a similar question on another forum. I was told that the waters are very calm and that I wouldn%26#39;t need medication. As to life jackets, i think its wise to have them on hand when on the water no matter what the conditions. We will be doing a cruise on Halong Bay in April also. Right now i am off to check that our boat has life jackets available! Glad you raised the subject. Thanks.

Since you are both well into the process can either of you recommend a boat? How much does it cost for a 2-night cruise?

Thanks

Ellen

We were there in January and found water very calm, it is within a bay - however not sure about April. Life jackects are on all the boats. We were provided with them for the kayaking, and gladly used them.

The boat we travelled on was the White Dolphin - a real treat! (Bai Tu Long Company) Cost is more expensive, but worth it. We did 1 night on boat and 1 night in 3 star hotel on Cat Ba Island inc all meals, transfers and kayak for US$165 per person. You can get 1 night trips for around $65+ just depends. We booked in Hanoi and it was much cheaper than booking from home.

Thank you for this helpful info. Cheers

we splurged on Bhaya...$360US for a double...baby for free

Thanks for the information!
