What to wear in Hanoi/HaLong/HoiAn in March?

Howdy all.... and thanks in advance for your good advice.

My wife and I are coming to Hanoi for a week in early March, with a trip to Ha Long Bay (Red Dragon), then three days in Hoi An.

I wonder what would be appropriate clothing? We%26#39;re from Southern California, in our 50s. Polo shirts and shorts? Sandals? Levis? Chinos?

How about for the nicer restaurants for lunch and dinner? (e.g., Metropole) Do you need a jacket? Tie?

The weather is supposed to average 65 low and 73 high for that time of year, altho who knows what it will actually be when we arrive.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Heaven forbid! I have never seen a tourist (even in the fanciest of places) with tie and jacket. Vietnam is casual, but not ';golf'; casual. Are you aware of the dengue fever problem? - short sleeves and shorts are not recommended right now due to the problem (much to my displeasure.) I went out a few days ago and bought long sleeve tropicals instead of my normal short sleeve travel clothes. This is especially needed where there was flooding last fall - just about everywhere, but Hue and Hoi An seem to get it more than other places. Go directly to the Ex-Officio website!

Hanoi is hot in the last few days. I think summer comes soon this year. So dress freely. You can bring your swimming suit for swimming in Ha Long Bay. It is such a great memory.

Even with the fancy dinning restaurant, T-shirt and casual dress is ok.

If you go to the cave in Ha Long Bay, you can bring the shoes with you, Anyway, that is the light walk only. If you want, you can try the light kayaking trip in Ha Long Bay, I think it is very nice.

Cap %26amp; Hat are needed for it is hot in Hanoi and Hoi An. Sun cream is necesary too.
